Plant supply programmes in commercial nurseries have until recently been catering for our current watering regime of twice a week with supplementary hand watering permitted. This means that there are a wide range of plants available including relatively water demanding species.
But due to the promotion of waterwise practices and the likelihood of future water deficits the proportion of these plants has reduced in favour of more drought tolerant varieties. The supply and marketing of waterwise varieties has increased dramatically in the last few years.
www.watercorporation.com.au has comprehensive information and advice on waterwise plant selection, including waterwise themed gardens; ‘Coastal’, ‘Mediterranean’, ‘Native’, Tropical’, ‘Cottage’.
Check their guide to ‘Waterwise Plants for WA’ which has a useful search function.
