Minimising lawn areas which are not functional is an important water saving measure. The following ground covers can be used as an alternative to lawn – where a large low expanse of plant material is required for visibility or aesthetics.
Some are trafficable and tolerate more wear than others. Ground covers have the added benefit of acting as living mulch, reducing evaporation. They can be planted beneath trees and other larger shrubs and reduce the need for replacing mulches at regular intervals.
