As well as the spreading drought tolerant ground covers suggested previously, the following plant types are suggested for verge planting:
Hardy grasses and tufting plants useful for planting in sweeps or bands across verges, eg. Lomandra, Dianella, Conostylis sp.
Small drought tolerant, clumping plants to give texture and contrast eg. Leucophyta, Dryandra, Westringia.
With increasing urban sprawl and programmes of infill to counter this, space is now at a premium. Newer housing developments are cutting back on verges. Yet in many older suburbs, substantial chunks of land (often as much as 5 or 6m wide) are still council property which the householder is responsible for maintaining.
Low growing, waterwise planting schemes and permeable surfaces are sustainable choices for verges rather than extensive swathes of lawn.
